Youtube Podcasts: What You Need to Know

Youtube homepage

Youtube just announced last week that podcasts are finally getting some spotlight in their product suite.

Youtube has had their eyes on the podcast scene for awhile. For the past few years the only way to have a “podcast” on Youtube was to upload some video version of your show to your channel.

The setback of this was that your videos were being classified alongside all other Youtube videos, leaving your show to compete with every other creator, not just other podcasters.

Youtube has officially rolled out a dedicated podcasts tab on their site. You can check that out now at youtube.com/podcasts

From the site, “A podcast show is a playlist, and podcast episodes are videos in that playlist” which are eligible for audio-only & video playback.

This is a huge plus, since it will allow your listeners to choose whether or not they want to listen to or watch your show.

This will also likely put Youtube ahead of many other streaming platforms as far as video podcasting is concerned. With the current limitations of Spotify video podcasts, Youtube will definitely take the lead in this category which makes sense, Youtube knows how to do video.

To add your podcast to the feed, you will want to navigate to Youtube Studio and either convert an existing playlist to the new “podcast playlist” or create a new podcast.

So what does this mean for your show?

In short, if you aren’t already utilizing Youtube for your podcast, it’s time to start preparing. The great news is that Youtube is free to use, so adding this won’t cost you any additional cash.

Youtube has 2 billion active users, you have the opportunity to reach a wider audience than ever before.
